The Horadric Cube

The Horadric Cube is a needed quest item in Act 2 and 3, as you must put together a number of quest items into a new item in able to finish the acts. However the Cube's functions go well beyond that. You can use it over and over, and you will do so. It is useful for storage, as it takes up 2x2spaces in your inventory, butopens up to 4x3, half the size of your stash. With so many cool items you want to hang on to in Diablo II, you'll soon have your cube stuffed full of gems or set items or both, and will have to clear it out by shuffling between it and your stash and your inventory when you need space in the Cube to actually transmute something.

The Horadric Cube is found in Act Two in the Halls of the Dead, a tomb under the Dry Hills, one of the early surface areas. You want it, so go get it as soon as you have the chance. Once you have it, the fun begins. You can see a full size shot of it, and the window it opens on the left side of your screen and has a very nice design.

In Act Two you use the Cube to combine the two parts of the Horadric Staff (each part you must find at the bottom of a nasty dungeon) in the Cube, then Transmute them into a whole staff, which is later used to open the way down to the Act boss monster. You can see a shot of that portion here. But as Cain tells you then, there are other uses to it. His speech at the time reads as follows:

"You have quite a treasure there in that Horadric Cube. According to the Horadric lore, the Cube can restore a Horadric Staff.

To do it - use the Cube as you would a scroll. When the Cube opens, place both pieces of the Staff into it and use the Cube's transmute power. You'll be pleased to know that the Cube has other alchemical uses as well...

Six gems plus one sword transmute into a socketed long sword. You may also transmute two quivers of crossbow bolts into one quiver of arrows, while two quivers of arrows yield one quiver of bolts. I must leave it to you to discover other formulae."

The shots here are from Act Three, where you again need the Cube for the quests. You must find four items this time, rather than just the two in Act Two, and they are much more gruesome. The body parts of the last true priest who battled against the corruption of the Act 3 boss was Khalim. He was murdered and then butchered, with various portions of his body hidden in strongholds across the land.

You must gather them all and then combine them with the Horadric Cube. As you can see in the image here, you need to gather Khalim's Flail, along with his heart, eye, and brain, and then click the Transmute button, which makes a pretty little graphical effect, and leaves you with just the Flail, which is slightly altered in appearance. It's quite a useful weapon, but you can't use it for long, since you need to destroy it when you smash the Compelling Orb, breaking the spell that has the enemy Zakarum on the surface attacking you. The destruction of Khalim's Will is also required to open the stairway down to the Durance of Hate, where you must go to finish Act Three.

Aside from the Quest uses, the Cube is a lot of fun to play around with in other way. There are tons of things you can combine with the cube, taking useless items and turning them into stuff that's hopefully better for you. Upgrading gems, making rejuvenation potions, adding magical properties to weapons, and more that has yet to be discovered, the Horadric Cube is a very cool toy.

We have listed all known Horadric recipes here. If you find any, or any modifications to these, please mail me describing them in detail.

Known Horadric Cube Recipes

To Make Armor and Weapons:

Place in the Cube:
Transmute to:
Notes:
2 Quivers of Arrows 1 Quiver of Bolts Useful for an Amazon using Bow or Crossbow who finds the other type of ammo. Not that either is in short supply in Diablo II.
2 Quivers of Bolts 1 Quiver of Arrows Useful for an Amazon using Bow or Crossbow who finds the other type of ammo. Not that either is in short supply in Diablo II.
6 Gems + 1 Sword One Socketable Long Sword A strange combination here, and most likely this sort of recipe will work on other types of weapons as well.
1 Spear + 1 Quiver of arrows A stack of Javelins. Unknown if higher quality Javelin Class items can be made from better spears, apparently not.

Potions, Gems, and Jewelry:

Place in the Cube:
Transmute to:
Notes:
3 Health Potions + 3 Mana Potions 1 Rejuvenation Potion Unknown if higher level health and/or mana potions can make full rejuvenation potions.
3 Amulets 1 Ring One recipe we made with 3 amulets which combined, had these stats
Fast Cast Rate
+12 to Mana
Cold Resist 44%
13% better chance of getting a magic item

Produced a ring with + 1 to Light Radius. So there is certainly no guarantee that the end product will reflect the ingrediants.

3 Rings 1 Amulet One recipe we made with 3 amulets which combined, had these stats
Fast Cast Rate
+12 to Mana
Cold Resist 44%
13% better chance of getting a magic item

Produced a ring with + 1 to Light Radius. So there is certainly no guarantee that the end product will reflect the ingrediants.

3 Gems of the same type and grade 1 Gem of the next higher grade Assumed to yield always the same type of gem, but not confirmed yet.
1 Ring + 2 Topazes 1 Coral Ring Coral is a magical modifier that grants resistance to Lightning damage. So this ring would be 21-30 or so Lightning resistance. Gem quality matters?

Most of these known recipes are representative of their type. There will be many other combinations of potions that will yield higher quality potions, as well as many other mixtures of weapons, and many ways to combine gems with items to make new items or jewelry. If you know of any we do not have listed here, please let me know.
