Make Your Own Items!

Playing upon Diablo fans' high interest in items that are created, not found (ala imbues), Blizzard Entertainment decided to add a brand new method of generating your own items. The result were Crafted items. These clever items can only be procured through the use of the Horadric Cube (hence the title"crafted") and when properly triggered through the combination of certain items - produces a final product that retains 1-5 fixed properties. This means that there can be from one to five effects that generate on the item that aren't completely random -- if you try the recipe again, you are sure to find a few of the same properties on the second result as the first These fixed properties are based on which group of Crafted Item Recipes a certain recipe comes from; currently, five categories of Crafted items are known.

Crafted items make up a huge new set of special recipes for the Horadric Cube. You can recognize them by noticing the orange item titles. (Note: Personalized items also have this same orange tint, so be wary of this fact when discerning between the two). You'll also want to note that not all Crafted item recipes are available in Single Player. Blizzard decided to change things up a bit by enabling certain Crafted item recipes on the Realms only.

Making A Crafted Item

Crafted items are produced via a universal formula consisting of certain items along with item type. The components of this formula include item type, any magical or rare jewel, one of the 33 runes and a specific gem. This can be more clearly explained through the following equation. Do note that several rules exist depending upon the recipe:

ITEM TYPE* + Jewel + RUNE** + Perfect GEM*** = ITEM TYPE* with fixed effects of crafted category, with random effects.

* Item type varies depending upon recipe.
** Rune varies depending upon recipe.
*** Gem type varies depending upon recipe.

Crafted Item Recipes

For a substantial table of recipes for Crafted items, head over to our Crafted Item Recipes section, which contains solid recipes you can try within your Horadric Cube. The currently known Crafted item Recipe groups are Deadly, Hitpower, Blood, Caster, and Safety items. Each group, save for Deadly items, has a recipe to create a special Helm, Boots, Gloves, Belt, Shield, Body Armor, Amulet, Ring, and Weapon.

Characteristics of a Crafted Item

In addition to sporting a spiffy orange title, Crafted items allow players to concoct items that end up with bonuses exclusive to that item. This means you can't get this type of item from related Rare or Magic items. The certainty of the item you'll be getting is also a characteristic that will lure many to Crafted items. Of course not all of the item's stats are guaranteed (the variable half) - but the fact that you can, without fail, predict the base bonuses you'll be getting from a certain recipe is outstanding.

What is meant by the "variable half," you might ask? Well, the variable half is that which changes with each spawning of a Crafted item. The fixed 1-5 bonuses that you expect will appear, but you'll also get an additional batch of effects that are entirely random. They will thus produce 1-5 standard Rare and Magic Prefix and Suffixes to compliment your 1-5 fixed bonuses. Moreover, these random effects are based on 2/3 of your character level and are generated much in the same way as Rare items.

Last but definitely not least, is the ability to socket Crafted items. This is truly a great feature, as this allows one to further enhance an item by adding a Gem, Jewel or Rune.

General Craftmanship

As you can take note of from the screenshot above, Crafted items are more in a higher level character's interest. Higher level and Hardcore characters usually have the necessary items to produce a worthwhile Crafted item and can also make better use of the socketing feature explained in the previous section.

Overall, Crafted items are a perfect blend of rarity and certainty of product. This, in turn, can yield items that are either really of no valuable use, or leave you with an item better than a comparable Rare, Unique, or Set item.
